The Vanuatu Vatu (symbol: VT; currency code: VUV) is the official currency of Vanuatu, issued and regulated by the Reserve Bank of Vanuatu. It is not subdivided into smaller units. Coins in circulation include 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 vatu; banknotes are issued in denominations of 100, 200, 500, 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, and 10,000 vatu. Introduced in 1981, the vatu replaced the New Hebrides franc, reflecting Vanuatu's independence. Today, travelers often monitor the AUD→VUV rate when planning visits to places like Port Vila, Espiritu Santo, or Tanna Island—and balance cash and digital payments for local experiences.
