The official currency of Norway is the Norwegian krone (symbol: kr, currency code: NOK), issued by Norges Bank. The krone is subdivided into 100 øre, although øre coins are no longer in circulation. Introduced in 1875, the krone replaced the speciedaler and became part of the Scandinavian Monetary Union. Norwegian banknotes, which come in denominations of 50, 100, 200, 500, and 1000 krone, feature designs inspired by the country’s natural landscapes and maritime history. The krone is not pegged to the euro and its value is influenced by factors such as oil prices and Norway’s central bank interest rates.
