The Brazilian Real (symbol: R$; currency code: BRL) is the official currency of Brazil, issued and regulated by the Central Bank of Brazil. It is subdivided into 100 centavos. Coins in circulation include 5, 10, 25, and 50 centavos, as well as R$1; banknotes are issued in denominations of R$2, R$5, R$10, R$20, R$50, R$100, and R$200. Introduced on 1 July 1994 as part of the Plano Real economic reform, the Real replaced the cruzeiro real at a rate of 1 real = 2,750 cruzeiros reais. The term "real" means both "royal" and "real" in Portuguese, reflecting Brazil's rich heritage. Today, travelers often monitor the AUD→BRL rate when planning visits to places like Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, or the Amazon—and balance cash and digital payments for local experiences.
